As prerequisite for receiving the registration producers of seed have to conduct field trials at different sites in order to test new varieties.
Key factor for the success of a variety is the match of plant physiology, determined by the genome, and the environmental conditions on the cropping site. Seed producers are often confronted with the argument that the high qualitative results of one variety in one area cannot be reached in another cultivation area.
That is why it is often very difficult for them to successfully register and market their products without a lot of intensive experimentation on a high number of sites near to the targeted customer. A small distance to the trial site is the only obvious parameter that guarantees similar situation to the customers' cultivation areas.
Thanks to SSC seed producers can reduce their costs considerably, due to the fact that cost-intensive field trials can be replaced by objective, satellite imagery based site comparisons.
